Choosing Footwear for Diabetics : Diabetic Shoes Diabetes Podiatrist Brisbane

Footwear can protect you against injury or be the cause of it. The role of shoes, socks and insoles is to decrease the peak pressures (pounds per square inch) experienced by the foot. For example, running shoes can lead to a reduction of pressures by 45% compared to hard soled shoes.

Shoes should be comfortable straight away without needing to be worn in.

Try on shoes later in the day when feet are bigger due to swelling.

Have shoes fitted, perhaps at Podiatrist Brisbane. They are deeper in the toe box allowing more height for clawed up toes.

Shoes will not stretch in the areas where they are stitched. Avoid buying shoes with stitch lines over any bony prominences.

Wear good quality, cushioned socks for long walks and extended periods of standing.

Only wear new shoes for an hour the first day. Visually examine your feet immediately after taking them off for red pressure areas. Build up wear time slowly.

Throw out socks that have holes. Don't darn them as the stitching can be an irritant.

Socks should not be too tight or too loose. Wrinkles can cause blisters.

Trace your foot while standing and check it against the shoe insole. None of your foot should be 'hanging off' the insole.

Alternate pairs of shoes during the day (if you have sensory deficit).

Shoes should be just under 1 cm longer than your toes and the widest part of your foot should be in the widest part of the shoe. The shoe should fit snugly across the instep to reduce rubbing from a loose shoe.

Learn how to do the 'lace locking' lacing technique to keep shoes snug around the ankle and heel. Your Podiatrist Hamilton may also add extra padding to the tongue of the shoe to create a better fit.

Shoes should not have a wave of spare material over the forefoot but you should be able to generate some spare material with sideways thumb pressure.

Most shops will let you take your new shoes to your Podiatrist Brisbane on approval.
